Preparing for World Children's Day Approach
In the heart of Wiesbaden, the city's playgrounds are a cherished spot for children to play and enjoy the outdoors. The Environmental and Landscape Management (ELW) and the Parks Department work tirelessly to ensure these spaces remain clean, well-maintained, and safe throughout the year, not just on World Children's Day.
The amount of cleaning required depends on the weather. After a nice weekend or sunny holiday, more work is needed compared to rainy times. Every three months, an operational inspection according to DIN 1176 is carried out, during which the functionality of the playground equipment is checked. This includes swing seats and chains, slides, screws, wooden beams, and more.
The Green Space Office checks the condition of the playgrounds once a week, shoveling sand back onto the playing areas, raking leaves, and collecting shards. Small repairs are made immediately, such as replacing swing seats, tightening screws, or sanding down split wooden beams. Defective components are dismantled and repaired in the workshop of the Green Space Office.
Inspection results show that all playground equipment is functional. On a typical clean-up, two employees use tongs to pick up litter from the sandbox and surrounding areas, which takes approximately 25 minutes. The ELW, along with colleagues from the Parks Department, have been responsible for the cleanliness of Wiesbaden's playgrounds since 2020.
In 2024, 350,000 euros were spent on repairs, and 635,000 euros on replacement purchases for Wiesbaden's playgrounds. The responsible entity for repairs and renewals since 2020 is not explicitly stated. However, the ELW, along with the Parks Department, work together to maintain the playgrounds and ensure the functionality of the playground equipment.
Boubakar Azzaoui, head of the playground cleaning team at ELW, has stated that they find and collect various items on Wiesbaden's playgrounds, including cigarette butts, glass shards, bottle caps, syringes, used condoms, and dog poop. Azzaoui emphasized that while cleaning is important, it would be better if people changed their behavior and used the trash cans provided on playgrounds.
In 2025, 995,000 euros are planned for replacement purchases, with some already implemented, such as playgrounds at Eleonorenanlage and Alfred-Delp-Straße, new playground equipment on Warmer Damm, an observation tower on the main street, and a carousel at Kochbrunnenplatz.
For further information, citizens can contact the relevant department or office through the Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden, located at Schlossplatz 6, 65183 Wiesbaden. The Press Office's website is www.wiesbaden.de/pressereferat. Once a year, a main inspection is carried out on every playground, during which all foundations and components are also checked.
The ELW, Parks Department, gardeners, playground, and tree inspectors work together to create a clean, safe, and enjoyable environment for Wiesbaden's children to play and grow.
