The Eco-Friendly Future of Neustadt in Holstein

Step by step, Neustadt steps towards a greener, sustainable future—a future proof development. The city's deemed-first sustainability report, now available online, showcases this journey, revealing achievements and areas for growth. This report, developed as part of a nationwide funding project, serves as a blueprint for its sustainable growth strategy.

As one of eight pilot municipalities, Neustadt collaborated with the "Service Agency Communities in One World" (SKEW). Adopted unanimously in April 2023, the sustainability strategy is the foundation for a dedicated sustainability management team responsible for its implementation. "Transparency is crucial," Mayor Mirko Spieckermann stresses. "This report reflects our progress and our challenges."

City Administration Leading by Example

The report adheres to the nationwide "Reporting Framework Sustainable Communities" (BNK) and was developed alongside the city administration's specialist departments. It's also bolstered by "fact sheets," succinct overviews of various sectors, such as education, culture, mobility, and climate protection. The city administration's active contribution and role model status are particularly noteworthy. The educational and cultural sectors also shine brightly with their diverse sustainable offers.

Climate Goals Fall Short

However, progress in the climate protection and climate change adaptation sectors remains undeniably challenging. Reaching the city's goal of greenhouse gas neutrality by 2035 seems daunting given the current resource constraints. Yet, around a third of the self-set sustainability strategy's goals have been accomplished.

Sustainability Manager Lina Sophie Koop comments, "We're on the right path and have managed to implement a third of our self-set goals with the resources at our disposal. However, we have a long way to go in many areas, particularly in climate protection."

Neustadt Joins the Global Green Community

Since 2021, Neustadt belongs to the "Global Sustainable Communities" network. This international network of over 250 cities and municipalities is united by the United Nation's Agenda 2030 and its 17 goals for sustainable development. The sustainability report will be updated every three years in the future. Further information and the complete report can be found online at: www.stadt-neustadt.de/PublikationenNachhaltigkeit.

Behind the Scenes

Though no official, comprehensive report exists, Neustadt's ongoing projects and community initiatives offer a glimpse into its commitment to sustainability. Notable initiatives include:

  • The construction of B&B HOTELS' first modular timber hotel in Germany, scheduled for completion in autumn 2025. This hotel project represents sustainable building practices, significantly reducing construction time and environmental impact.
  • Local educational programs that give children along the Baltic Sea coast the chance to appreciate and comprehend their surroundings.
  • Events like the Ancora Yacht Festival, which focuses on sustainable drive concepts and showcases innovations in water sports technology, further promoting responsible usage of the region's natural resources.

Neustadt's drive towards sustainability reflects a broader trend in Schleswig-Holstein focusing on sustainable tourism, construction, and environmental stewardship. Despite the absence of a formal municipal sustainability report, projects and initiatives demonstrate Neustadt's undeniable commitment to the future.

Embracing the Green Wave

Although the reported lacks a comprehensive overview of Neustadt's sustainability strategy and progress, its current projects and community initiatives are a testament to the city's commitment to sustainability and future-proof development. The modular timber hotel project and environmental education programs highlight the transformation Neustadt is undergoing, ensuring its growth is both eco-friendly and sustainable.

  1. The city administration's role in developing the sustainability report, a blueprint for Neustadt's eco-friendly future, emphasizes their commitment to environmental-science and sustainable-living.
  2. The development of B&B HOTELS' first modular timber hotel in Germany showcases the city's goal of sustainable-living, reducing the environmental impact of construction in the home-and-garden sector.
  3. Local educational programs focusing on children's understanding of their surroundings in the Baltic Sea coast, as well as events like the Ancora Yacht Festival promoting sustainable drive concepts, demonstrate Neustadt's dedication to climate-change adaptation and sustainability in lifestyle.
