The Digital Bundle of Dresden's Beauty
Discover a treasure trove of images capturing Dresden's charm – both old and new – with the launch of The City Archive's digital image database! Accessible for all, this free resource boasts an impressive collection of approximately 24,000 digitized historical photos and more than 8,000 new photographs taken by the talented Albrecht Voß between 2021 and 2023. With this archive, you'll get an unmatched view of Dresden's architectural evolution.
Director of the City Archive, Prof. Thomas Kübler, expressed utter delight, stating, "We've reached a milestone, feeling proud of our achievement, the remarkable community project, and the creation of a vital, significant source for cityscape documentation."
The concept for this project has roots in a nearly 200-year tradition of cityscape documentation in Dresden. An inventory analysis conducted in 2017 and 2018 paved the way for the relaunch of the Cityscape Photography project, resulting in a compelling visual representation of every district in the city. Researchers can now delve into this collection, and virtual city tours can be enjoyed anytime, hassle-free.
Besides offering a visual journey through the city, this project marks the first attempt at creating a thorough, topographical documentation of Dresden. Elements of a cityscape, such as structures, streets, plazas, and parks, along with landmarks like mountains, rocks, and rivers, contribute to urban landscapes constantly on the move. Catching the changes in these vibrant districts is worthwhile, providing insights for urban history, science, public relations, urban planning, and a self-aware city society. Photography, with its power to vividly depict change, is an ideal medium for this purpose.
A physical exhibition at the City Archive's Elisabeth-Boer-Straße 1 location, running until March 22, 2024, showcases the historical context of cityscape documentation and features a selection of Albrecht Voß's captivating photographs of the city's districts. Escape into the charm of Dresden on Mondays, Wednesdays from 9 am to 4 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 5 pm, and Fridays from 9 am to 12 pm – all for free!
