Nine Dinosaur-Themed Retreats Found Near Lakes in Lower Saxony: A Comprehensive Guide for Dinovaurs Enthusiasts - Refugees in Lower Saxony: Nine migrants found near Heide, North Sea, Dinosaurs: Report
It's all downhill, faster and faster. Or pleasantly fast, depending on your speed. The popular summer toboggan run is nearly half a kilometer long. Hiking enthusiasts can trek up the trail, but there's also a chairlift available. Once at the bottom, there's the high ropes course or the Samson pit, where they used to mine silver ore - UNESCO World Heritage! The Upper Harz region is teeming with trails for hiking or mountain biking.
- For Whom? Nature fanatics, active holidaymakers, families, ancient mining enthusiasts
- Duration Three to five days
- Transport Approximately 1.5 hours by car from HeckHannover. The train takes twice as long, with Braunhauntlage only 20 minutes away and Magdeburg also roughly 1.5 hours by car.
Neuwerk, Wattenmeer
This tiny island off Cuxhaven technically belongs to Hammerbutcher Hamburg, but you can only reach it via Lower Saxony. This insignificant speck in the Wattenmeer can be circumambulated in just over an hour. The chance of meeting others is pleasantly low. Neuwerk holds just 40 souls. The only place to grab supplies is at the base of the lighthouse, which has a fantastic view. It's a kiosk-like store, operated by the one and only Hartmut Lange.
- For Whom? Nature aficionados, walkers, families, lovers, seniors, solo adventurers
- Duration One to two days
- Transport Ferry from Cuxhaven in just under two hours or a tidal walk in three hours.
Lüneburger Heide
Bursts of vibrant colors meet the eye - pink, lilac, violet. You'll find them all and more in the heath landscape, which is twice the size of Mallorca. Those seeking refuge from city noise or simply a visual feast for the eyes are in the right place. There are over 60 hiking trails for day trips up to 25 kilometers. The numerous old villages with their half-timbered homes are particularly well discovered on the "Heidekultour". Every spring, artists in 40 places present their new works.
- For Whom? Everyone, sans snobs
- Duration One to three days
- Transport Drive from Lüneburg to Bispingen in about 45 minutes, Hamburg to Egestorf in an hour, from Hannover to Schneverdingen in just under 90 minutes.
Greetsiel, Ostfriesland
Flat land, boat trips, and birdwatching in Leyhörn. Greetsiel on the edge of the Wattenmeer is crisscrossed by small and larger waterways, perfect for relaxed paddling. The charming town shows off its Dutch charm in brick red, and it's home to two windmills. Campers can stay on a designated area, and bird enthusiasts can visit the nature reserve or join guided tours from the information wagon - unless they fancy walking through the mudflats themselves.
- For Whom? Couples, seniors, nature fanatics
- Duration One to three days
- Transport Drive from Hannover in 275 kilometers (3.5 hours by car, 4.5 hours by train). From Bremen in 150 kilometers (under two hours by car, three hours by train).
Oldenburg

The Oldenburgers love their bikes - rain or shine - and take joy in the cozy big city. The grandeur of the former residence is evident in the Nordic-nuanced castle and princes' palace in the city center. From there, it's into the pedestrian zone, one of the oldest in Germany. Those who are shopping averse still come here, as they'll find at least as many cafes, bars, and restaurants as shops in the old town. Culturally, the student city offers stages like the Oldenburg State Theatre, some nightlife, and the Horst Janssen Museum. And (in winter) don't miss: cabbage. The national dish tastes nowhere better than here.
- For Whom? Couples, families
- Duration Two to three days
- Transport From Bremen by train, 40 minutes. From Hannover by car, two hours. Hamburg and Munster are each about 160 kilometers away.
Heide Park Soltau
Let go and scream. Sure, the entrance fee is steep, and the prices for snacks are through the roof, but for that, it's a full day of adrenaline. Literally. The second-largest amusement park in Germany has over 40 rides and roller coasters, plus dozens of snack stands, a hotel, and a campsite and cabin area for overnight stays.
- For Whom? Families, couples, teens
- Duration One to two days
- Transport The Heide Park is reachable by car and train. From Hamburg or Hannover, each about an hour by car, two by train. From Magdeburg, two and a half hours by car.
Emden
Here lives the East Frisian, and the best thing an Emder (not Emdener) can do is hop on a ship and sail across the water that surrounds the city: harbor, Dollart, or North Sea. Famous East Frisians include Otto Waalkes, director Wolfgang Petersen, Henri Nannen (founder of stern), and Karl Dall. Two of them are responsible for notable museums: the Kunsthalle (founded by Nannen) and the OttoHus. Topic: the work of the deserving comedian. Don't miss the giant Ottifant that crashes through the brick wall!
- For Whom? North Sea lovers, families, seniors
- Duration Two to three days
- Transport From Bremen, 1.5 hours by car. 2.5 hours by train or car from Munster. Hannover is 250 kilometers away.
Weserbergland
Fairy-tale land awaits: Burg Polle (Cinderella), Osterwald (where the seven dwarfs from Snow White lived), Bodenwerder (home of Baron von Munchhausen), and of course, the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Those who love traditional tales or appreciate spas and spa towns find their peace here. Located between gentle hills, within a radius of less than an hour's drive, there are four spa towns: Bad Pyrmont, Bad Nenndorf, Bad Salzuflen, and Bad Oeynhausen.
- For Whom? Everyone: the young-at-heart, the leisurely
- Duration One to five days

Dino-prints-Extravaganza, Osnabrück
Generations of North Germans know the dinosaur footprints on the wall near Osnabrück from their school trips. Legit. UNESCO Geopark Terra Vita houses them - along with 100 natural monuments and geological phenomena such as springs, canyons, erratic boulder fields, ancient quarries, and archaeological traces dating back 300 million years.
