Revamped Chest of Drawers: Transitioning from Vibrant to Classy

In the pursuit of a fresh home makeover, one savvy homeowner took on the challenge of refinishing a solid wood dresser they found on Craigslist for just $20. With no prior experience in stripping paint or refinishing something as large as a dresser, they embarked on a rewarding journey that resulted in a beautifully transformed piece of furniture.

**Preparation and Cleaning** The first step was to remove all hardware (knobs, handles) and clean the dresser thoroughly with mild soap and water. This helped the stripper and finish work more effectively, ensuring a clean slate for the transformation ahead.

**Applying Paint Stripper** Next, a chemical paint stripper suitable for wood furniture was used to remove the existing finish or old paint. After evenly applying the stripper, the author waited for the recommended time until the finish began to bubble or peel. Using a scraper, they gently removed the softened finish in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damage.

**Neutralizing and Cleaning** Once the stripping was complete, some strippers required neutralization to stop the chemical process. The surface was cleaned with an appropriate neutralizing agent or warm soapy water, then left to dry completely.

**Sanding** After drying, the surface was sanded to smooth out imperfections and remove any remaining finish residues. Medium-grit sandpaper (around 120-150 grit) was used on an orbital or palm sander for efficiency, focusing on removing scratches, old paint remnants, and smoothing rough areas. Finer grit sandpaper (220 grit) was used to finish and create a smooth surface before painting or staining.

For deeper scratches or gouges, wood filler was used to fill them, let dry, and sand smooth to create an even surface.

**Final Cleaning** All dust was removed with a tack cloth or vacuum to ensure a clean surface for finishing.

**Optional: Staining or Painting** If staining, the chosen wood stain was applied evenly and wiped off excess. Let dry thoroughly. If painting, a primer suitable for wood was applied to help paint adhesion. Then, the paint was applied in thin, even coats, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next.

**Sealing** The transformation was completed with a clear protective topcoat like polyurethane, wax, or lacquer to protect the surface and enhance durability.

**Supplies Needed** - Paint stripper (chemical) - Scraper (plastic or metal) - Sandpaper sheets (120, 150, 220 grit) - Electric sander (orbital or palm) - Wood filler and putty knife - Cleaning supplies (soap, water, tack cloth) - Primer and paint or wood stain - Protective topcoat (polyurethane, wax, etc.)

This method revitalizes your solid wood dresser by carefully removing old finishes and smoothing the wood, preparing it for a fresh new look that can last for years. The author is pleased with the finished product and the dresser's drawer slides and handles/knobs were replaced by their husband.
