Rhein-Kreis Neuss Bans Nighttime Lawnmower Use to Protect Hedgehogs
In an effort to safeguard the declining hedgehog population, the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district administration has implemented a ban on nighttime lawnmower use, effective from 1 October 2025. The measure aims to provide a safer environment for these nocturnal creatures.
Hedgehogs, being most active during twilight and night, are at high risk of injury or death from lawn mowers due to their small size and slow movement. The district administration has taken this step to protect them, encouraging residents to use lawn mowers during the day, ideally between 10 am and 4 pm, when hedgehogs rest.
To further ensure the safety of hedgehogs, the district advises providing safe retreat areas, such as wood piles or brush piles, at the edge of gardens. Before mowing, gardens should be checked for hedgehog hiding places and cleared from the mowing area. Additionally, robot lawn mowers should be kept away from particularly protected zones using boundary wires.
The ban on nighttime lawnmower use will initially last for one year and can be extended. The district administration hopes that this measure will help prevent further decline in the hedgehog population and encourage a harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
