Get ready to party, art enthusiasts! It's the 70th birthday of the legendary documenta, and we're celebrating in style! 🎂
Join us tonight (6:00 PM sharp) at the documenta Hall for a lively event that'll look back on seven thrilling decades of art and societal impact. There'll be talks from the bigwigs themselves:
- Kassel's Green-friendly Mayor, Sven Schoeller
- His deputy, Timon Gremmels, the Minister of Culture of Hesse (SPD)
Following their speeches, a heated panel discussion will ensue, focusing on "Seven Decades of documenta in Kassel: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" with the past and present movers and shakers of documenta's artistic directorial team.
🎉 7,000 Palms for the 70th Birthday! 🎉
A city-wide art project called "7000 Palms" by artist, Cosima von Bonin is also kicking off for the special occasion. This vibrant extravaganza features silhouettes of palm trees in the form of pennants for the city's residents to decorate together!
As for documenta, it all began back in 1955 when Arnold Bode first opened the doors of the Kassel exhibition. Traditionally happening every five years for a whopping 100 days, the 16th edition is slated for June 12 to September 19, 2027, and will be curated by the dynamic Naomi Beckwith, deputy director and chief curator of the New York Guggenheim Museum.
🔍 The Backstory:
Originally created to promote and showcase modern art that was suppressed during the Nazi era, documenta has since evolved to represent a wide range of artistic disciplines and themes. It's become a beacon for sustainable, site-specific works and has even expanded to include permanent outdoor installations around Kassel.
Recently, the 15th edition stirred up some controversy, but we're looking forward to seeing what documenta 16 under Naomi's curation has in store for us in the future!

Starting in September 2025, a lecture series called re:searching documenta is set to delve deep into the 70-year history of the exhibition, exploring past ideas and charting the path for future innovation.
