Sustainable Event Transportation: JOURNEY ON THE RAILWAY For Eco-Friendly Commute to Large-Scale Events

Laid-Back Guide to a Greener Event Industry

Hey there, event-goers! Let's talk green. The event industry's got a mighty challenge, but it ain't insurmountable. Reducing CO2 emissions, particularly during travel to and from events, is crucial. Enter TICKET TO RIDE, a project enginesered by The Changency and Crowd Impact with a lofty goal: a greener, fairer world through eco-friendly mobility at major events.

This ain't just about saving the planet, folks. It's about making events more enjoyable. Why? Well, remember when the audience of 10 AnnenMayKantereit summer tour concerts circled the globe almost 1,200 times? Yeah, that wasn't good for anyone. TICKET TO RIDE tallied up the numbers, and an astounding 88% of the tour's emissions came from the audience's travels.

So, where does TICKET TO RIDE come into play? During the 2023 AnnenMayKantereit summer tour, they got to work. They kept their eyes on travel patterns and plotted ways to make journeys feel lighter on mother earth.

The tour stopped in 10 of 13 concerts, covering 215,000 visitors. TICKET TO RIDE surveyed more than 5,000 of them at all 10 gigs, creating the largest data set in Germany on the matter. They hopped on the communication express train, spreading the word about green travel options via emails, social media, and websites.

The campaign gained traction, and many folks decided to jump on the sustainability train in various ways:

  1. Combo public transport tickets: In five cities, concert attendees were offered a free public transport ride, increasing its use and reducing emissions significantly.
  2. Secure bike parking: In cities like Hanover and Dresden, bike enthusiasts found safe, secure spaces to park their wheels, motivating more folks to hop on and pedal away.

And the cherry on top? The campaign's initial successes! Travel emissions dipped by 19% among surveyed participants. Showcasing once and for all that an environmentally-friendly approach can be as catchy as the latest tunes.

TICKET TO RIDE scored positive feedback across the board. There were more than 18,000 likes and almost 300 comments on Instagram, consistently applauding the project.

One small fan campaign in Dresden even offered 1,000 engraved apples to attendees traveling sustainably. The apple of appreciation was shared widely on social media, proving that eco-friendly efforts can generate buzz too.

The initiative sparked discussions beyond the digital realm as well. A round-table talk in March 2024 delved into systemic levers, including with stakeholders like Deutsche Bahn, BDKV, Eventim, and Agora Verkehrswende. All the findings are available on the TICKET TO RIDE website since May.

TICKET TO RIDE has pointed out the challenges but also offers solutions for the event industry's future.

  1. Effective communication: Encourage sustainable travel through information and advertising.
  2. Regional travel: Artists targeting various regions can prevent long travels and large carbon footprints.
  3. Secure parking options: Provide secure bike parking and organized bus transport.
  4. Policy & infrastructure: Political actions and sustainable infrastructure supporting transport transition are essential.

Get ready, event industry, it's time to shape a sustainable future together! You can learn more about TICKET TO RIDE and its recommendations on the official TICKET TO RIDE website. Here's to greener events and more enjoyable experiences!
