This approach encourages the design of durable products that can withstand daily use and wear and tear, increasing their lifespan and reducing waste.

Car manufacturers like Ford and Audi are taking notice, working towards using more recycled plastics in their automobiles. This shift not only reduces waste but also contributes to sustainable construction, as materials can be reused once the buildings are demolished.

However, the issue of planned obsolescence, which reduces a product's life to accelerate sales, remains unaddressed in America. The average garment in the clothing sector is made to last only 10 wearings, leading to significant environmental damage. To combat this, the focus should be on designing products and materials for longevity, reuse, repair, and recyclability.

The circular economy promotes durability by designing products with high-quality materials that are resilient, durable, and resistant to wear and tear. This approach reduces waste, conserves natural resources, lowers environmental impact, and supports economic sustainability.

Key strategies include designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use longer, using renewable and recycled feedstocks, fostering systems thinking and collaboration, supporting business viability, adopting zero waste goals and resource efficiency targets, and industry-specific innovations.

Efficiently reusing materials in recycling centers is essential for items to be considered durable. Electronic devices should remain functional over an extended period. A grading system can pressure companies into making better products and help consumers make informed decisions.

Unfortunately, many manufacturers no longer make repairable products, making it difficult for consumers to extend the life of their items. Smartphones, for instance, are now often glued shut, making the entire phone affected when the battery reaches the end of its life and bloats.

France has taken a lead in this area by introducing a mandatory standardized Repairability Index in 2021. However, the successful adoption of these practices requires cross-sector commitment, regulatory support, and consumer acceptance, which vary by industry and region. Technologies and business models must be adapted to specific product value chains without a one-size-fits-all solution.

In conclusion, promoting durability and a circular economy is crucial for industries to reduce environmental impact, waste generation, and resource depletion while enhancing economic resilience and competitiveness.
