Planned 300 million euro overhaul for Party Miles refurbishment - Three hundred million euros allocated for Ballermann's rebuilding efforts
The Palma de Mallorca, renowned as a preferred party destination among Germans, is planning a substantial 300 million euro renovation. The 35-point plan, presented by Palma's Mayor Jaime Martínez, aims to revamp and modernize the Playa de Palma area over the next decade, funded primarily by the city's own resources.
Martínez stated that the main goal of the project is to make the Playa more livable, addressing both the needs of residents and visitors. To achieve this, the city hall intends to collaborate with industry associations and residents' groups to solidify the project's specifics.
A significant aspect of the renovation includes beautifying the second and third sea lines, with an allocated budget of 80 million euros. This includes upgrading roads, sidewalks, and streetscapes to improve accessibility and aesthetics.
In terms of mobility, the Playa is set to be integrated with the "BiciPalma" public bicycle rental network. Moreover, park-and-ride parking lots will be constructed, connected to the planned train line by the Balearic government. These enhancements are expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve transportation accessibility.
Another essential component of the project involves addressing the housing shortage by converting outdated one- and two-star hotels into residential units and building new homes in the Ballermann hinterland.
Historically, plans to renovate the Playa have encountered obstacles, but the city hall of Palma has made strides in upgrading the sewage system and street lighting near the sea for the past two years. Construction is paused during the summer months to avoid disturbing tourists, with the concluding phase scheduled for the upcoming winter.
The renovation project is comprehensive, targeting improvements in infrastructure, mobility, housing, and overall livability, with a significant budget and a decade-long timeline for execution. Successful implementation will necessitate sustained effort due to the project's complexity and the challenges faced in the past.
The community policy will need to prioritize the incorporation of residents' groups and industry associations in the decision-making process of the Playa de Palma renovation, ensuring alignment with the needs and expectations of both residents and visitors.
The employment policy can be revised to accommodate the increase in construction jobs appearing during the renovation project, as well as potential opportunities in home-and-garden sectors due to the planned improvements in the Playa de Palma's infrastructure and aesthetics.
