Thrift Shop Event Held by HerCampus and Eco Action
The Thrift Shop event, a biannual occasion at Holy Cross, recently took place in the Hogan Ballroom, offering students an opportunity to acquire new clothing while promoting a less consumer-based lifestyle. This event, hosted by HerCampus and Eco-Action, was held on October 28, 2024, and was a significant step towards fostering more conscious consumer behaviour among students.
Fiona Smith '26, Co-Chair of HerCampus at Holy Cross, stated that the Thrift Shop is an excellent platform to promote sustainability and give back to the community in a fun and creative way. Emma Weiss '26, Co-Chair of Eco-Action and a general member of HerCampus, emphasized that options like the Thrift Shop are better for the environment than buying new clothing because they reduce clothes in landfills, resource waste, and chemical pollution.
The Thrift Shop event is not just about shopping; it also raises awareness about the environmental impacts of the fashion industry. By encouraging students to buy secondhand clothing instead of new items, the event helps reduce textile waste and demand for fast fashion.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the Thrift Shop event also builds community around eco-friendly values. Meredith McDonough '26, a general member of HerCampus, stated that the event is a great way to bring people across campus together and allow students to express themselves through their clothing choices.
The Thrift Shop event is more than just a shopping experience; it is an opportunity for students to fulfill the Holy Cross mission of living for and with others. Students were invited to donate clothing on October 23 and October 24, and shop on October 28 from 5-7pm in Hogan B/C.
The Thrift Shop event was not the only significant event at Holy Cross recently. On March 22, 2023, The Spire and HerCampus, two student journalism groups at Holy Cross, hosted an event to celebrate The Spire's centennial year. Despite the campus closure, the Holy Cross community still celebrated Valentine's Day, as reported by Matt Nickerson '24, Chief Features Editor for the article "Storm-Closed Campus Still Celebrates Valentine's Day".
The Boss Babe Bootcamp event, hosted by Her Campus and ProspHER, was another significant event held in the "features" section of the Hogan Ballroom on November 9, 2022. Gioia Guarino '23 was the Features Section Editor for this event. The event was an uplifting occasion featuring empowering female clubs on campus.
