Take a Peek into the Past: Mill Day Highlights Historic Craftsmanship

Highlighting Age-Old Artistry: Mill Day Unveils Crafting Hubs - Timeless Artisanship Revisited: Mill Day Spotlights Traditional Processes in Plants

Rubber gloves on, hard hats at the ready, as we travel back in time on Mill Day during Pentecost Monday. Mills scattered across the Rhineland and Westphalia open their doors and give you a glimpse into the past, showcasing an age-old craft that once ruled the region: water and wind-powered mechanisms.

The 32nd German Mill Day gathers steam to bring attention to the fascinating history of our industrial heritage, as shared by the Regional Association Rhineland (LVR) in Cologne. Many of us have fond memories of the mill in our hometown, according to Julia König, who manages Mill Day at the LVR.

Join the festivities, or kick up some dust on a guided tour

Ready to get your hands dirty? Step right up, and prepare to be amazed! The Region of the Regional Association Westphalia-Lippe, for instance, invites you to the LWL Open-Air Museums in Hagen and Detmold, expecting a crowd of thousands. The locations offer presentations, guided hikes, or bike tours that allow you to dive into milling history up close.

The farms and fields of North Rhine-Westphalia once brimmed with mills, each one harnessing the nearby rivers and streams to mill grains, process oil, bones, saw wood, produce paper, or churn out rags. Even the mill region of Rhineland between Erft, Wupper, and Sieg will let you in on their secrets, with mills, hammer mills, and water power plants ready to showcase their industrial prowess. If the wind cooperates, expect the charming Grottenhertener windmill in Bedburg (Rhein-Erft district) to be grinding away in all its glory.
