In the heart of Schleswig-Holstein, a unique event is taking place this May, aiming to shed light on the often overlooked wonders of nature in our cities. The #WeedShow, a nationwide action day, is set to take place on Saturday, May 17th, in Scharbeutz, with the aim of raising awareness about the ecological functions of wild plants in urban spaces.

Coordinated by Julia Krohmer from Senckenberg and Alexandra-Maria Klein from the University of Freiburg, this grassroots initiative invites everyone, regardless of prior knowledge, to join in the celebration of urban biodiversity. The meeting point for the event is at 10 am at the Bürgerhaus Scharbeutz.

Participants will embark on nature excursions, guided by experienced botanists, to discover the hidden gems of Scharbeutz's urban wilderness. A high-resolution magnifying glass and the Flora-Incognita app will help with plant identification during the event. Sturdy trousers are recommended, as kneeling on the ground will be involved in the exploration process.

The day will culminate with a snack on the blooming orchard at Wennsee, offering a chance to relax and reflect on the importance of nature in our cities. This event is not limited to Scharbeutz, as the #WeedShow is a part of a larger, nationwide initiative that aims to increase awareness about the ecological functions of wild plants in urban spaces across Germany.

This year, Scharbeutz is participating in the Action Month of Nature Experience for the first time. With over 800 nature excursions available during the month, it's an exciting time to explore the natural beauty of Schleswig-Holstein.
