In the quaint town of Teterow, Germany, resident Dietmar Pavel has been battling a persistent issue - a flooded basement. The latest incident occurred just a day after a bout of heavy rain, necessitating the assistance of the Teterow Volunteer Fire Department once more.

The fire department, led by dedicated volunteers, pumped out water from Dietmar's basement from 9 PM to 11 PM on Monday. However, the source of the problem was not the sewer line, as confirmed by Walter Bommer, a representative from Teterow Utilities. Instead, roots had grown into the stormwater line, reducing its capacity and leading to the flooding.

To address this issue, the company Uniroka, specialists in root removal, was hired and informed of the problem. They are scheduled to start work on Thursday, given their high workload.

The stormwater line behind Dietmar's buildings was pointed out during the initial investigation, and the city-provided submersible pump was unable to handle the water, necessitating the involvement of the fire department. A search excavation was conducted to find a shaft that would allow for inspection of the stormwater line.

Dietmar, who celebrated his 83rd birthday amidst this ordeal, has expressed frustration at his inability to reach a competent city utilities employee in the weeks following the June incident. He believes this problem should not have occurred.

The houses and their rainwater drainage systems were built during DDR times, and no plans exist anymore, reported Walter Bommer. This presents a challenge in understanding and addressing the root cause of the flooding.

To prevent frequent flooding in Dietmar's basement, a combination of technical and structural measures is typically recommended. These include inspecting and repairing the stormwater line, enhancing basement water protection, improving drainage and surface water management, installing a sump pump system, and coordinating with the local municipality for long-term urban infrastructure improvements.

By implementing these solutions, Dietmar hopes to find a lasting solution to his flooding problem. The key lies in consulting local drainage specialists or waterproofing contractors familiar with Teterow’s soil and stormwater conditions to provide a tailored and effective solution.

  1. Given the persistent flooding issue in Dietmar's basement, he plans to consult with local drainage specialists or waterproofing contractors, hoping to find a tailored solution that considers Teterow's unique soil and stormwater conditions, thereby improving his home-and-garden lifestyle.
  2. Despite the challenge posed by the lack of existing plans for the houses' drainage systems, which were built during DDR times, Dietmar is optimistic that addressing the issue with the stormwater line, improving drainage, and coordinating with the local municipality will create a better weather-resistant home-and-garden lifestyle, improving his overall lifestyle in Teterow.
