Twenty years ago, Amine Hamma was apprehended for his affinity towards death metal music. Now, he's playing a pivotal role in fostering Morocco's metal music culture.
In the heart of Rabat, Morocco, the Tricinty Festival 2025 took centre stage, attracting hundreds of metal enthusiasts and becoming a significant event in the city's cultural calendar.
Organised by Amine Hamma, the man behind Morocco's first dedicated metal festival, the Tricinty Festival, Hamma's vision for the event has grown from a local celebration to an international spectacle. Hamma, who moved to France for 11 years and obtained his Master's Degree, returned to Morocco in 2014 and founded the Tricinty Festival.
The 2025 edition of the festival expanded to a two-day event, featuring local bands Thrillogy, Mycose Of You, Old School, and We Come For War, as well as international acts like Klone, Angelus Apatrida, and Sugar Horse. The festival was held in April and hosted at Rabat's Cinéma Renaissance.
The Tricinty Festival has become a platform for local bands to act as ambassadors for Morocco's metal scene in Europe. Hamma's ambition is to help local bands perform in Europe and sign record deals. This ambition is rooted in Hamma's own history in the metal scene, playing in bands such as Immortal Spirit and Reborn.
The festival showcases a variety of metal styles, including grunge, death metal, and Amazigh rock. The 2025 event also featured an air guitar competition with a brand new guitar as the first prize. One of the highlights of the summer series in 2025 was the performance of the band "Arrhythmias" on June 26, which was specifically noted for the event.
The Tricinty Festival's growth is not without its challenges. In 2003, Hamma was arrested and charged with "shaking the foundations of the Islamic faith" for his activities in the metal scene. However, King Mohammed VI helped secure the release and got the charges dropped for Hamma.
The festival has also evolved, starting as a small local event to inviting international bands from 2024, under the patronage of the HIBA Foundation. The Tricinty Festival 2025 marked another milestone in the festival's journey, solidifying its position as a key player in Morocco's metal scene and beyond.
Metal has existed in Morocco for nearly 30 years, and the Tricinty Festival is a testament to the enduring passion and talent of the metal community in the country. The festival is more than just a musical event; it's a celebration of creativity, resilience, and the power of music to bring people together.
