Heat Pump Week Kicks Off in the UK

The Heat Pump Week has begun in the UK, marking a significant step forward in the country's efforts to decarbonise home heating and meet net zero targets. This week-long event is part of a broader initiative to increase the adoption of heat pumps as a key technology for a low-carbon future.

Objectives and Progress

The main objectives of Heat Pump Week are raising awareness, encouraging adoption, and improving understanding. The UK has seen a record number of heat pump installations in the first half of 2025, with over 30,000 certified units installed, representing a 12% year-on-year increase. However, this progress remains far below the government’s annual target of 600,000 installations, with current rates putting full boiler replacement at 150 years away at the current pace.

To address this, the government is offering grants and incentives such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) in England and Wales, providing property owners with grants of up to £7,500 for heat pump installation. Industry initiatives like the Hive Installer Club are also engaging tradespeople directly to accelerate installations and educate consumers. Efforts to simplify planning and permission procedures aim to make installation easier for homeowners.

Future Events and Outlook

The Heat Pump Week will feature a series of discussions and events aimed at boosting heat pump adoption. One such event is hosted by Plug Me In and Panasonic in Manchester City Centre on September 27 and 28, designed to raise consumer awareness about heat pumps.

The government, regulatory bodies like Ofgem and NESO, and industry leaders are working together under the Clean Flexibility Roadmap to promote a flexible, clean energy system that integrates heat pumps effectively. Anticipated policy announcements and possible enhancements to grant schemes throughout 2025 and beyond are expected to close the gap towards the target installations.

Partnerships and Collaboration

Heat Pump Week is organised by Green.TV, Plug Me In, and the Heat Pump Association. Ian Fisher, Director of Marketing and Communications at Calisen, expressed pleasure in partnering with Green.TV Media for the Heat Pump Week, stating it's a unique and necessary platform to drive engagement and awareness of sustainable heating solutions.

In addition to Heat Pump Week, the World Sustainable Built Environment Conference will be held in Australia, focusing on sustainable buildings and green home improvements. Air Quality News also has stories related to heat pumps and green home improvements.

Looking Ahead

As the world moves towards a low-carbon future, heat pumps are set to play a crucial role. With their ability to produce around three times more energy than they consume, heat pumps offer a highly efficient and sustainable heating solution. The Heat Pump Week is a significant step in the right direction, aiming to accelerate the adoption of heat pump technology and advance the sustainability agenda.
