Unforeseen ingredient cook-off calls on residents to experiment: 'Give a novel dish a shot'

The Wild Foods Cook-Off, a unique and community-driven event, is set to return for its second edition on November 2 at the Baker University Wetlands Discovery Center in Lawrence. This event, hosted by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, encourages residents to be part of the solutions for ecological challenges by promoting sustainable food practices and celebrating local ecosystems.

Home cooks will have the opportunity to explore new flavors that don't typically come from a grocery store. They can experiment with plant-based foods, reduce waste, and use environmentally friendly kitchen tools such as bamboo or FSC-certified wood utensils. For hunters, anglers, and backyard foragers, the cook-off offers a chance to put their harvests to creative use.

Innovation and creativity are at the heart of the Wild Foods Cook-Off. Participants are invited to prepare dishes using ingredients sourced directly from Kansas' fields, forests, and waterways. Invasive species like Asian carp and garlic mustard are encouraged as ingredients, helping to restore balance in ecosystems and promoting the use of these species in a positive way.

Amy Bousman, engagement coordinator at the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, encourages participants to try new ideas with wild ingredients or stick to proven recipes. The event offers easy tips and a free newsletter for residents to save more and waste less.

The Wild Foods Cook-Off first appeared on The Cool Down and is quickly becoming a community-driven showcase of creativity, stewardship, and homegrown pride. By encouraging Kansans to cook with wild and foraged ingredients, the Wild Foods Cook-Off helps everyday people reconnect with the land in a meaningful, hands-on way.

The goal of the Wild Foods Cook-Off is to celebrate local ecosystems, promote sustainable food practices, and show the flavorfulness of conservation. Don't miss out on this opportunity to be a part of this exciting event and contribute to a healthier, more resilient future for Kansas.
