"Which individual wields the strongest influence in Burgenland?"

Wine Chivalry in Europe crowns top Uhudler at Stegersbach's Hotel Larimar.

"Which individual wields the strongest influence in Burgenland?"

Get ready to savor some culture, buddy! We're talking about the Uhudler, the vivacious red wine that's more than just a drink - it's the ultimate symbol of South Burgenland. The Hotel Larimar in Stegersbach recently hosted the Uhudler Wine Festival, crowning the crème de la crème of this fabled beverage.

From Controversial to Coveted

In the bustling arena of the 8th Uhudler Wine Tournament 2025, none shone brighter than Resi and Harald Kaiser from Hagensdorf. This dynamic duo emerged victorious in the European Wine Knights competition.

The Rewards of Hard Work

With 250 guests looking on in the lavishly decked-out Hotel Larimar, their Uhudler was bestowed the prestigious title of "Knights' Order Wine." The tournament trophies and an honorary certificate were presented by esteemed order representatives. "We're thrilled with the award," the winners said. "This is a huge honor and a testament to our dedication."

A Burgenland Classic

The Kaiser family runs a 5.5-hectare vineyard, making them one of South Burgenland's larger Uhudler wine producers. Their wine is renowned for its earthy, traditional taste, a legacy they've been preserving for over 30 years.

After the ceremony, a scrumptious seven-course Uhudler menu was served, accompanied by select wines from the Wine Estate Wieder in Neckenmarkt.

From Scorned to Celebrated

The Uhudler has come a long way since its early days as a banned planting wine. Today, it's a protected brand and regional cultural treasure, only produced in the districts of Güssing and Jennersdorf.

Now, there are around 110 hectares of Uhudler cultivation in the region, with the "Association of Friends of the Uhudler" boasting about 340 members. For roughly 40 families, the Uhudler forms the economic backbone of their main occupation, while many others cultivate smaller areas alongside their primary jobs.

So, next time you raise a glass of Uhudler, remember it's not just a wine - it's a slice of South Burgenland's rich viticultural history!
